Charles Hume knows no other life than
P&I having first joined the UK P&I Club straight after
graduating with a law degree from Oxford University.
He joined the Shipowners' Club in
September 1990 to head up the Claims Department and became Chief
Executive in July 2004.
Charles chairs the International Group's
Salvage Sub-Committee which co-ordinates the Group's response to
developments in the world of salvage and maintains close links with
the ISU which has many of the Club's Members as its own members. He
also chairs the Group's P&I Qualification Working Group, which
is seeking to develop a qualification for staff in all the
Clubs.
Charles is delighted to be leading the Club in its
endeavour to be the No. 1 liability insurer of smaller vessel
owners worldwide, with the implementation of the strategy of
developing offices in Singapore and Vancouver, as well as London,
enabling the Club to extend its reach to all of its Members more
easily.
Away from the office Charles enjoys
vegetable gardening at home in the Kent countryside and the
occasional round of golf, his knees being now too dodgy to
withstand the tennis or squash which he used to play. He does not
enjoy the gym but tries to go regularly and always finds it better
than he expects to!
He has a wonderful wife, Sheila, and
four wonderful children who are all in their 20s and now beyond
paternal influence.
