I was first introduced to the marine insurance business in 1999
when I spent a few years working part time for Allianz Canada while
attending University. In 2003 I joined Zurich where I worked for
the next five years underwriting property and casualty business.
Marine insurance had always interested me and when an underwriting
position became available at the Vancouver Office of the
Shipowners' Club I quickly realized this was an opportunity that I
couldn't pass up and in July of 2008 I joined the Club as an
Underwriting Trainee and never looked back!
I spent my first year learning and assisting with the
underwriting of the Pacific Northwest book of business while at the
same time completing my CIP (Chartered Insurance Professional)
designation. One year later I was promoted to Underwriter where I
was granted some of my own authority and took on additional duties
and responsibilities.
Working for the Club presents one with many advantages and
opportunities. I had the wonderful opportunity of traveling abroad
for the very first time and visiting the London Office. Here I
learned to appreciate how multi-faceted the Club was in terms of
areas of operation throughout the world and just how large our
market share of small to medium sized vessels really was. The Club
also encourages continued education and allows one to learn at
their own pace. In house alone there is unlimited marine knowledge
and expertise to which everyone has equal access. Questions,
concerns and ideas are always welcomed by colleagues and management
and everyone is friendly and helpful.
I have found that the Club's values and standards coincide with
my core beliefs, which makes coming into work every day something I
want to do - not need to do. In addition to the hard work I put
into my career, my family and friends are also critical to my
happiness and success in life and I find that the Club encourages
that balance, for which I am grateful. The Club has become my 'home
away from home'.
I am excited to be a part of the Club as they evolve as the
leading liability insurer for small to medium sized vessels and
look forward to helping it achieve this goal.
