Member Specific Initiatives

The Loss Prevention Department is dedicated to providing initiatives to assist Members in minimising their exposure to claims through publishing guidance materials, offering technical advice and managing the Ship Inspection Programme.

With staff located in London and Singapore, working closely with the Underwriting and Claims Departments, an integrated approach is key to effective risk management.

In addition to the case studies, Lookouts and publications developed by the team in Loss Prevention, the department carries out a number of specific initiatives such as those set out below:

Presentations and Seminars

The Loss Prevention Department carries out presentations and workshops which can be tailored individually for single Members or as a seminar for a group of Members in a particular geographical area.

Cargo Securing Manual for Barges

Following a series of claims relating to unsecured cargo, we have introduced a requirement for barges to be issued with a Cargo Securing Manual. We are aware that the provision of such a manual is a SOLAS requirement and by definition is not a requirement for barges. However, we have introduced a warranty for a similar but no so detailed document, approved by the Managers or their appointed surveyor, to be provided for all barges except those only carrying bulk cargoes.

The degree of securing required for a cargo will depend upon the cargo type and the trading area of the barge .  A "draft" copy of this manual is available to view - click here.

It should be noted that we will consider waiving the requirement for a Cargo Securing Manual will be made if the barge has a cargo hold of sufficient depth to encompass the whole cargo but this will also be dependent upon the cargo type to be carried and the trading area of the barge.

Pre Employment Medical Examination

The Pre Employment Medical Examination (PEME) programme has been established as a Loss Prevention measure to reduce the number of claims caused by pre-existing medical conditions.  Crews undergo a thorough medical examination at an approved clinic. For more information please click here to access the PEME booklet.
