Amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, it has been reported there is a heightened risk of drifting naval mines detected in the vicinity of the Black Sea and neighbouring countries.

On March 28, it was reported the Turkish military diving team deactivated a stray naval mine off the northwest coast of Turkey. Similarly, the Romanian Defense Ministry declared that a fishing vessel had identified a stray mine and alerted maritime authorities, who undertook an operation to defuse the mine approximately 39 nautical miles from southeast Romania.

All vessels navigating in the Black Sea ought to be alive to these risks and take precaution through keeping watch of the area and comply with local navigation warnings.
