- Guidelines for the Safe Carriage of Charcoal in Containers
The Cargo Incident Notification System (CINS), in conjunction with the International Group of P&I Clubs (IG) and the TT Club, has published new Guidelines for the Safe Carriage of Charcoal in Containers. These guidelines supersede all previous Charcoal guidance published by CINS and include practices to improve safety during the carriage of Charcoal and to ensure that it is properly prepared, declared, packaged, and carried.
Although described as ‘Carbon’ in dangerous goods regulations, this document uses the term ‘Charcoal’ – except where further distinction is required. Charcoal shall be transported in compliance with the requirements set out in the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG Code). However, the practices set out in this document include selected provisions from the IMDG Code, plus additional precautions to enhance its safe carriage.
