The European Union (EU) Ship Recycling Regulation (SRR) comes into effect from the 31 December 2020.

The new regulation aims to reduce the negative impact that ship recycling has on the environment and the health of workers. This is to be achieved through the prohibition and restriction of the installation of hazardous materials on ships, with existing hazardous materials being listed in a dedicated inventory.

The regulation provides an approved list of ship recycling facilities that comply with stricter ship recycling requirements, which EU flagged vessels are to utilise when being scrapped. The introduction of the SRR speeds up the ratification of the Hong Kong convention, within the EU, whilst also implementing additional safety and environmental requirements.

This interactive infographic, identifies some of the most frequently asked questions surrounding the SRR, click on the highlighted icons to reveal the answers.
