The EU-MRV Regulation entered into force in 2015, with monitoring obligations beginning on 1 January 2018, applying to shipowners and operators, aiming to reduce vessel emissions through monitoring, reporting, and verification. The Regulation was amended in 2023 to align with the EU's strengthened climate goals, extending monitoring, reporting and verification to methane and nitrous oxide from 2024, and from 2025 to offshore vessels and general cargo ships 400 GT and above. This robust system is a prerequisite for the recent inclusion of maritime transport in the EU Emission Trading System.

The Club has produced an infographic with key information and guidance to assist Members in understanding the legislation.
